בוועידה הארצית של הליגה למניעת השמצה, פתח אברהם פוקסמן, יו”ר האירגון, במתקפה נרחבת על הנוצרים האוונגלים. הוא האשים שהם פתחו במערכה ל”ניצורה של אמריקה”, החותרת תחת ההפרדה בין הכנסייה למדינה.

המהפך הפוליטי שהתחולל במפלגת העבודה הוציא את הזירה הפוליטית משיווי משקלה, ועתה הוא מחייב את ראש הממשלה שרון לגבש מדיניות אמיתית, במקום לפרסם הצהרות סותרות ולבחור מדיניות על פי צרכיו הפוליטיים הפנימיים ה’שוטפים’. יש לקוות שמהפך זה יעודד אותו גם להתנגד לדרישות הבלתי סבירות שמציבים לנו ידידינו האמריקנים.

לכאורה, נדמים יחסי ישראל ארצות הברית כמו ירח דבש אחד ארוך. מימשל בוש נחשב כאוהד את עמדותינו יותר מכל מימשל שקדם לו. היקף התמיכה מצד הנוצרים האוונגליסטים הוא חסר תקדים, והגיבוי לישראל בסקרי דעת הקהל נשאר יציב. אולם בביקורי האחרון בניו-יורק, נפגשתי עם חתך רוחב של מנהיגים יהודים אמריקנים, ונתקפתי דאגה רצינית.
